Presenters: Bruce Evans

Sponsored by NAEMT

Why should you consider throwing your hat into politics as an elected official?  In 2014 there were 17 physicians in the U.S. House of Representatives and three in the U.S. Senate.  It was the next year that the so called “Doc Fix” legislation was passed that prevented Medicare cuts to physicians’ fees.  Having elected officials who understand the challenges faced by a profession is instrumental to making the changes needed for sustainability. The best way to do this is to have those officials come from within the profession.

Step up and get involved!  Spend a day with NAEMT and our expert faculty to learn how to run for an elected office in your local jurisdiction or state legislature.  In this high engaging workshops, you’ll hear from experienced politicians who are also EMS providers about their path to political success and how you can prepare for that journey.  Topics will include:

  • Developing a Strategy:  What’s your long-term goal? Do you eventually see yourself on the national stage? What local elected positions might be competitive and lead to additional steps up the ladder?
  • Taking a Stand: why you should become a leader among leaders; developing the key elements of your platform; understanding your choices (and challenges) around party affiliation; the nuances of polling
  • Show Me the Money: how to fundraise; understanding campaign finance law; use of the internet to build support (and raise money); the art of “the ask”
  • Running a Campaign: Get a roadmap and understand the everyday mechanics for the running  of a campaign; how to use opposition research; marketing strategy and tactics; how to use PR for free media coverage; developing a slogan; understanding the all-important “ground game”

What’s at stake? The future of EMS, from sustainable funding to staffing to the safety and mental health of our practitioners.  Decisions will be made by those who show up and tell others their stories.  You’ll get the insight and advice  from insiders and specialists on how to get elected.

EMS providers have long given their service to their patients and now is the time to give your service to your communities and the profession by representing EMS in our legislatures.
