Attrition or Attraction: Competing for Caregivers in a Post Pandemic World

Monday - July 25 - 1:00 pm - 4:45 pm

Presenters: Steve GrauScott Moore, JDBrett LyleMike Poynter

Thousands of EMS workers have quit their jobs since the beginning of the pandemic. Service disruptions have occurred nationwide, and this trend will likely continue. Agencies struggle to address the problem, many because they don’t really understand why caregivers are leaving in the first place. Quick fixes, including significant pay increases and sign-on and “thank you” bonuses, are falling flat. Organizations that take the time to learn why caregivers are leaving—and act thoughtfully—will have an edge in attracting and retaining talent.

In this intensive “how-to” workshop, participants will engage with leaders in examining trends, understanding caregiver’s needs, and working with presenters and other participants to develop implementable plans for retention and recruitment.

What you will learn:

  • What employees are running from and what they will gravitate to
  • How toxic supervisors can erode people’s connections to EMS and the agency
  • What pay, benefits and perks are most meaningful
  • Navigating grief, loss and burnout to help caregivers achieve emotional balance
  •  Cultural and generational factors that influence attrition and attraction in EMS
  • Core elements of a retention management plan
  • Actions required by EMS leaders to attract, develop and retain caregivers
