OPENING KEYNOTE: WHAT EMS LEADERS CAN LEARN FROM THE IHI ABOUT PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

Each year, Pinnacle chooses a leader from outside the EMS mainstream to focus our thoughts for the week. Those who have interacted with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) or have taken its educational courses know it is a powerful and inspiring organization. Martha Hayward, Lead for Public and Patient Engagement, will challenge our understanding of public and patient involvement in healthcare. As a cancer survivor, Hayward has experienced firsthand how the patient experience can impact the delivery of healthcare. In her role at IHI, she has been involved in numerous improvement efforts and educational programs, helping organizations change the way they approach the provider-patient relationship.

A founding board member of the nonprofit Women’s Health Exchange, Hayward’s experience spans health, politics, and education. As Executive Director at The Partnership for Healthcare Excellence, Ms. Hayward brings a particular focus on, and considerable insight in, the area of patient advocacy. She also served as a member of the EMS Compass steering committee.
