Despite evidence that fatigue plagues the majority of EMS providers and can raise the risk of injuries to caregivers and patients, many organizations struggle to address the issue. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Association of State EMS Officials convened a panel of experts to review the evidence and develop voluntary fatigue risk management guidelines for EMS agencies and personnel. In this session, the project’s principle investigator and one of the leading authorities on patient and provider safety will present the new guidelines for the first time and describe the evidence that led to their development—and what EMS leaders can do to keep their providers and patients safe.
