WHAT ICS DOESN’T TEACH LEADERS ABOUT LARGE-SCALE INCIDENTS: RISK, OPERATIONS, RECOVERY AND RESILIENCEVIEW DESCRIPTION
Incident management and crisis response are critical functions that span all public safety service missions. A successful response depends on much more than our on-scene actions during the incident. Preparation for large-scale incidents, including risk analysis, development of interagency and stakeholder relationships and improving mission proficiency, requires deliberate actions before, during and after the event.
Many critical incidents grow rapidly and exponentially and demand skills not practiced during routine responses, such as engaging with public officials and media, deploying a robust liaison network, managing numerous information requests, increasing logistics management capabilities and understanding and effectively employing surge forces.
In this session, we’ll discuss best practices for addressing each of those topics as well as how to create effective mechanisms to care for your people before, during and after the event.
Bruce Moeller, PhD, a Senior Associate with Fitch & Associates, is the former Director of Public Safety in Pinellas County, Florida; Todd Sheridan is an Operations Director of a major EMS system in New Jersey; Krista Haugen is the Director of the Survivors Network; and Jim Marshall, MA, is a certified therapist and Director of the 911 Training Institute.
