CHASING THE MEDICARE DRAGON: AN FBI FRAUD INVESTIGATOR’S PERSPECTIVE

    VIEW DESCRIPTION

Ambulance reimbursement is an area of significant scrutiny from federal regulators, including CMS, the HHS Inspector General, the FBI and the Department of Justice. Due to willful or unintentional negligence, more agencies and individuals find themselves in the crosshairs of fraud investigators. The consequences are costly, with penalties including fines of up to $11,000 per claim, exclusion from reimbursement programs, and even prison.

Multiple ambulance owners are now serving prison sentences and municipalities have repaid millions of dollars; at the same time, the rules for self-reporting violations to avoid criminal sanctions recently have been tightened even more. This session will outline specific enforcement emphasis areas and strategies you can use to ensure that your agency is not a target of a future investigation.

Special Agent Shaun O’Neill has more than 19 years of experience working high-profile criminal matters for the FBI, and currently supervises a squad of Agents and Analysts that investigates health care fraud, public corruption, civil rights and human trafficking.
